Hand-Cut Engraving in Dubai: Costs and Where It Works
Hand-cut engraving in Dubai is priced per panel, and most bespoke work lands between AED 450 for a single brass door plate and AED 18,000 for a full mashrabiya screen with frame and finish. This guide sets out what changes that number, which material suits which job, and how long a commission takes from drawing to fixing.

What hand-cut engraving actually is vs laser and machine engraving
Hand-cut engraving removes metal or timber with a graver, chisel or hand punch, so every line has depth, a cut wall and a slight taper that a beam cannot copy. Laser engraving burns a shallow line, fast and even, and a CNC router cuts an exact repeatable groove.
The differences matter when you are specifying:
- Line depth. Hand cut is usually 0.4 mm to 1.2 mm. Laser is often 0.1 mm to 0.3 mm.
- Toolmarks. Hand cut shows slight irregularity that reads as hand work. Laser lines are uniform and flat.
- Repetition. Forty identical plates are quicker and cheaper cut by machine.
- Repair. A hand-cut line can be re-cut and blended. A scorched laser line usually means a new plate.
- Price. A machine-cut plate runs roughly 40 to 60 percent less than the same design hand cut.
For a villa nameplate in a shaded entrance, laser is reasonable. For a 2.4 m screen lit from below, hand cutting is what makes the pattern visible after dark.
Where hand-cut wins: mashrabiya screens, brass door plates and majlis ornamentation
Hand-cut work wins wherever the piece is decorative, close to the viewer or lit from an angle. In Dubai that usually means screens, door plates, majlis panelling and hotel ornamentation.
Mashrabiya and decorative screens
A cut screen is mostly shadow. Hand-cut apertures give each opening a slightly different edge, so daylight and backlighting produce a gradient across the screen instead of a flat grid. Machine cutting is the right call for a run of 20 panels with one repeating geometry.
Brass door plates and villa nameplates
A hand engraved brass plate holds chamfered letters with depth you can feel with a fingertip. Take a look at see completed engraved screens and brass panels from earlier commissions before you settle the finish, because surface quality is the part a written quote cannot convey.
Majlis and hotel ornamentation
Majlis wall panels, ceiling borders, reception logos and wayfinding in brass or copper are normally specified for touch. Hand chasing gives a softer edge and lets the workshop match a motif on an existing panel. Gold leaf, patina and lacquer are applied after cutting, and they change the look more than cutting depth does.

Hand-cut engraving cost in Dubai
Hand-cut engraving in Dubai falls into three price bands: small plates, mid-size decorative panels and full screens. The figures below are for hand-cut work with finish included, before VAT.
- Brass door plate or villa nameplate, up to 150 x 300 mm: AED 450 to 900 each
- Engraved decorative panel, up to 1 sq m in 1.5 mm brass: AED 2,800 to 6,500
- Mashrabiya or decorative screen, 1.2 m x 2.4 m in teak or brass: AED 9,500 to 18,000
Worked example for a villa majlis:
- Three brass door plates at AED 650 each: AED 1,950
- One 1.2 m x 2.4 m teak screen with brass inlay: AED 12,400
- Delivery, mechanical fixing to the stone threshold and patina touch-up: AED 900
- Subtotal: AED 15,250. With 5 percent VAT: AED 16,012.50
The same job specified with machine-cut plates and a laser-cut screen usually lands between AED 9,000 and AED 10,500, which is the gap you are paying for. Our hand-cut engraving and ornamentation services cover cutting, chasing, finishing and fixing as one package. Send your sizes and a photo of the wall to request a hand-cut engraving quote.
Materials: brass, copper, teak and MDF with brass inlay
Material moves the price more than design does. Brass sheet costs several times more than MDF, and hardwood has to be stable and kiln dried before it is cut.
- Brass, 1.5 mm to 2 mm sheet. The default for plates, panels and inlay. Takes fine detail, ages to a warm patina, and can be lacquered to hold a bright finish.
- Copper. Softer, cuts faster, and reacts to humidity with a green patina within months outdoors. Popular indoors on bars and reception walls.
- Teak. Stable in Dubai heat and humidity, holds a deep cut, and pairs well with brass strip inlay.
- MDF with brass inlay. The budget route for large indoor panels. The MDF is sealed and painted, with solid brass letters or strips set into routed channels. Not for exteriors or wet areas.
Two rules of thumb. Solid brass adds 60 to 120 percent to a panel price against MDF with inlay, and anything outdoors should be brass, copper or teak rather than MDF. For finish comparisons across materials, see more Dubai engraving and ornamentation guides.
Lead time for a bespoke engraved screen or panel
A single engraved door plate takes about 5 to 8 working days. A bespoke screen runs 4 to 6 weeks from approved drawing to fixing on site.
| Stage | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Site measure and drawing | 3 to 5 working days |
| Client and consultant approval | 2 to 4 working days |
| Material procurement | 3 to 7 working days |
| Hand cutting and engraving | 10 to 20 working days |
| Finishing, patina or lacquer | 3 to 5 working days |
| Delivery and fixing | 1 to 3 working days |
The order of work:
- Send photos, approximate dimensions and a reference image by WhatsApp.
- Receive a marked-up drawing and a fixed price for the stated size and finish.
- Approve a sample corner or letter style before full cutting starts.
- Cutting, finishing and quality check at the Jebel Ali workshop.
- Delivery, fixing and a final wipe-down of the surface.
Pattern density is the main variable. A tight geometric screen with 400 apertures takes roughly twice the cutting time of a 120 aperture screen of the same size. Material and finish changes can still be made up to the procurement date.
Specifying for site: fixing to stone, moisture, UV and facade approvals
Fixings and approvals decide whether a good panel still looks right in three years.
- Stone and tile. Drill and sleeve the fixing holes, and use brass or stainless screws. Keep steel fixings away from direct contact with brass to prevent galvanic staining.
- Adhesive. Neutral cure silicone only. Acetic cure silicone attacks brass and discolours it within weeks.
- Moisture. In spa, poolside and wet corridors, specify lacquered brass or marine grade stainless fixings and hold the panel at least 15 mm off the wall for airflow.
- UV and heat. Uncoated teak greys in direct sun and needs oiling every 12 to 18 months. Lacquered brass holds a bright finish but will show a scratch line.
- Facade screens. A new external screen on a building face normally needs approval through Dubai Municipality or the Dubai Development Authority, submitted by the consultant with drawings showing fixing, weight and setback from the boundary.
- Expansion. Leave 2 to 3 mm gaps at panel edges on long runs so thermal movement does not bow the frame.

Frequently asked questions
How much does hand-cut engraving cost in Dubai?
Small brass plates run AED 450 to 900 each. Decorative panels up to 1 sq m run AED 2,800 to 6,500, and a 1.2 m by 2.4 m screen runs AED 9,500 to 18,000 with frame and finish. Price is driven by material, size and pattern density, not by the number of letters alone.
Is hand-cut engraving better than laser engraving for brass?
For pieces seen close up or lit from an angle, yes. Hand cutting gives depth and toolmarks that catch light. Laser is faster and cheaper for repeat runs of 20 pieces or more, or for small text at 3 mm height where depth does not matter.
How long does a bespoke engraved screen take in Dubai?
Allow 4 to 6 weeks from approved drawing to fixing. A single brass door plate takes about 5 to 8 working days. The cutting stage alone is 10 to 20 working days depending on how many apertures the pattern has.
Can hand engraved brass panels be used outdoors in Dubai?
Yes, with the right finish. Unlacquered brass develops a patina, which many clients want. Lacquered brass holds a polished look but needs care. Copper greens over time, and MDF with brass inlay should stay indoors.
Do I need approval for an engraved screen on a facade?
Often yes. External screening on a building face normally goes through Dubai Municipality or the Dubai Development Authority, with consultant drawings covering fixing method, weight and boundary setback. The workshop supplies fixing details and material specs to support the submission.
